The answer to this question very much depends on the organisational culture and management style.
We have all seen pictures of overseas call centres (think Slum Dog Millionaire) and been thankful that we don’t have to spend our working days in such an environment. But in reality, very few changes to the office interior are triggered purely by the desire for a better working environment. The more usual scenario is a change to the organisational structure to improve efficiency, expiring building lease or launch of a new product/ service.
In our experience, the key to an efficient office design is as a well thought out brief which incorporates all the elements of a scheme, from the practical (who goes where?) to the softer issues of what message the finished scheme conveys to end users and visitors.
For example our contact centre design for Coventry City Council was part of the transformation process for the Council that brought together front line services into a “one stop shop” operation within a 1970’s office building with no raised floor.
